A question we are asked by our customers on a daily basis while they are looking at a new ebike to buy is what is the difference between the mid-drive and hub-drive ebike motors? Which is better and why? Is the mid-drive always the superior choice?
And, like most things in life, the answer is: it depends on how and where you are using the ebike!
Hub-drive ebike motor pros:
Lower cost to buy
Less wear and tear on your drivetrain (so can be cheaper to maintain)
Generally cheaper and easier to replace the motor if it fails
Hub-drive ebike motor cons:
More weight concentrated at the rear of the bike which affects handling and ride comfort slightly
Less power delivery/use of gears so hill climbing ability isn’t as good as a mid-drive
Can be less energy efficient, depending on the riding conditions
Often found on low-end bikes which sometimes have poor quality parts (not the bikes we sell, mind you!)
The battery paired to the motor is often smaller and lower capacity than mid-drive models
More difficult to remove the rear wheel if you get a flat
Generally, we recommend a rear hub-driven ebike for people who have a limited budget and are primarily commuting on sealed surfaces in town and on gravel tracks such as the Wadandi Track where there aren’t any major hills to deal with. In this use-case, these bikes are perfect for their needs.

Our Velectrix hub-driven ebikes, such as the Urban ST, are set up with high quality gears and brakes, and we also offer an upgrade to Tannus Tube Armour which will significantly reduce the chance of getting a flat tyre! This deals with many of the downsides of a rear hub driven ebike.

As a side note, while front hub-driven motors do exist, mostly as upgrade kits bought online, and we do not recommend these kits due to the poor handling and weight distribution.
Mid-drive ebike motor pros:
Low and centres weight distribution
Better handling and control riding offroad
Quick and easy access to both wheels in case of maintenance or repairs
More torque and power for climbing steep hills
Generally come with higher quality components and well known brands
Often come with significantly larger batteries capable of riding 80km+
Better re-sale value
Mid-drive ebike motor cons:
More expensive to purchase upfront
Higher wear and tear to the drivetrain (Nb. this is much less of an issue with IGH/belt driven models)
Replacing the motor and/or battery can be more expensive and difficult, although many companies such as Specialized offer discounts on replacements outside of the warranty period
As a result, we usually recommend a mid-drive ebike to people who have a more flexible budget, value ease of servicing and repairs at home, want to have a more stable/weight distributed bike, ride up lots of steep hills, or people who are riding MTB trails aggressively.

The Wadandi (Saltwater People) are the traditional custodians and inhabitants of the south west Boodja (Land/Country) of Western Australia (WA). Part of the wider Noongar group of Aboriginal people in the south west of WA, the Wadandi developed an ancestral six-season calendar that guides them to live with and better understand the local plants, animals and changing weather patterns. These seasons are defined not by specific dates on a calendar, but by observations of the subtle changes around them each year.
While most non-Indigenous people living in the various regions of Australia still generally refer to the European-derived four season definitions (Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn), also using “Wet Season” or “Dry Season” definitions for the far north regions of Australia, there has been increased awareness in recent years that these Euro-centric seasonal definitions don’t quite match up and apply as well in many parts of Australia where the native flora and fauna are distinctly unique from what is found in continental Europe or North America.

So while it is technically Winter here in Margaret River, Spring doesn’t “officially” start in Australia until 01 September, August generally has a noticeable shift in weather and season. Some local people call it “early Spring” and the Wadandi call it “Djilba” season, also known as the Season of Conception. Both describe the same observations; We start to experience more warmer, sunny days, mixed in with cool nights and occasional rainy days. And while on our mountain bike and gravel rides in the forests we see native trees and orchids that are starting to emerge and bloom, as well as native animals such as kangaroos with young joeys (or look like they’ve very close!).
Here in the store and workshop, we also see a gradual increase in demand for repairs, servicing, hires and new bike sales as people start to emerge from the cold and wet of winter, and want to take advantage of pleasant, mild sunny days. We all know in a few more months it will be hot and dry, and we will all be complaining about the heat! Aside from the occasional muddy puddle, the offroad trails are also running beautifully with the slippery “pea gravel” still stuck together allowing for fast, flowy riding conditions.

The next season of the Wadandi calendar is known as “Kambarang” (aka “Season of Birth”) which is the transition season from the cooler, wetter early-mid Spring weather, leading into the warmer, drier Summer conditions. There are many baby animals around at this time of year for visitors to look at (and locals to watch out for!). This season is also a great time of year for outdoor activities such as bike-packing, mountain biking and hiking, and we see a significant increase in business. Our regular customers may have noticed that over the past few months the LCB team have been asking you to insert and manually select your savings account, or pay via cash or direct bank transfer, instead of using credit cards or tap and go.
This is a summary of our cost of acceptance for our current eftpos provider. As you can see, our business pays a significant % fee for the convienience of credit card tap and go payments.
When you add these fees up over the financial year, it is costing us thousands in fees that are going to the banks and merchants, instead of being spent locally and employing local people in our store.
For example, if you buy a new bicycle for $1000 and use tap and go VISA or Mastercard, we pay the merchant a $10.70 fee for the convienience of them handling that transaction. Considering that freight costs have nearly doubled in the past two years, and other costs have also gone up, this fee takes a big bite out of what are increasingly slim margins on our goods which we rely on to stay profitable and provide a service to the community.
Our trial over the past few months has resulted in reducing our average merchant fees by about 20% compared to the previous quarter. This is great for us and we want to continue to give this a go. The alternative, otherwise, is to instead have customers pay the merchant fee at point of sale, which we’ve noticed many other hospitality and retail stores in town implement in the past year. We’d prefer not to do that though.
So remember to please do your bit to help: Don’t let banks and credit card merchants take away money from local organisations and small businesses. Pay with cash or EFTPOS insert where you can. Cash does have fees and risks associated with it too, so or for larger purchases, the best and most secure option is to pay for goods using direct bank transfer.
We’ve seen a huge surge in unroadworthy ebikes and emotorbikes being used on public roads and paths. Many of these are using dangerous and non-compliant conversion kits bought online.
Parents and children need to make sure that they are fully informed as to the legality of these unlicenced motor vehicles to avoid running into trouble.
